We are delighted to announce that Viromii is participating in the Bioreact project, funded by the Agencia Valenciana de la Innovación (AVI).
BIOREACT: Biological recycling of starch-based plastic waste through fermentation into lactic acid.
- Objectives: The main objective of the project is to use innovation to valorise plastic waste by transforming it into lactic acid, which can be used to create polylactic acid (PLA), a highly versatile bioplastic with applications in a range of industries including medical, textile, packaging and wrapping, thanks to its excellent properties and high biodegradability. These characteristics give it great potential as a replacement for petrochemical plastics.
- Description: The project focuses on the valorisation and recycling of plastic waste based on starch polymers, such as bags or mulching films commonly used in agriculture. Until now, this waste reached the end of its useful life by biodegrading in occupied soils, causing unavoidable harm, as traditional plastic recycling alternatives were not sufficiently worthwhile to implement. Through the research carried out in the BIOREACT project, innovation will be used to give value to this increasingly used and produced plastic waste by increasing its recycling and valorisation rates, preventing this waste stream from becoming harmful and unprofitable for the environment and enabling recycled materials of higher quality and economic value to be obtained.
