SMARTIP & iKUXIN: Smart cushioning and tip technologies for comprehensive user monitoring for tech transfer

Maintaining proper posture and monitoring physical activity are key factors in preventing a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly in healthcare settings such as geriatrics, rehabilitation, and long-term care. However, current tools for real-time monitoring of user behavior are often invasive, lack precision, or fail to adapt to the specific needs of each patient.

Researchers at the Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU) have developed two sensorized platforms:

SMARTIP, a miniaturized tip embedding force and orientation sensors onto canes and poles to capture support force, ground contact angle and gait dynamics.

iKuxin, a smart cushion outfitted with 16 precisely placed pressure sensors, and an optional wheelchair module measuring temperature, humidity, vibration and 3D motion, to assess seating posture, detect prolonged static positions, falls and micro-adjustments.

Both solutions relay live data to a mobile app where advanced algorithms produce intuitive dashboards, real-time alerts and personalized recommendations. These systems are focused on the orthopedic sector and can be adapted to the analysis of sports performance and ergonomics in the workplace.

Both SMARTIP and iKuxin have reached functional prototype stage and been validated in real-world settings.

SMARTIP’s Benefits:

  • Early detection of gait instability to reduce fall risk
  • Continuous, real-time mobility tracking for personalized rehabilitation
  • Adaptive design compatible with any cane, pole, crutch or support aid

iKuxin’s Benefits:

  • Pressure mapping to prevent pressure ulcers and musculoskeletal strain
  • Instant posture alerts to correct seating alignment
  • Environment-aware wheelchair monitoring with fall and vibration detection

The purpose of this contact is to gather commercial feedback and explore potential collaboration for future commercialization of the technology.
