DiabeText is a software tool that generates a database of short text messages (less than 160 characters) for people with type 2 diabetes mellitus to help them better manage their disease. The database contains more than 1,000 messages organized around three pillars: medication adherence and lifestyle, including diet and exercise. This digital system integrates patient-generated data to deliver automated, tailored SMS to support self-management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The system can also integrate data from electronic health records (EHRs) to provide more accurate recommendations. In addition, the system incorporates lifestyle surveys to increase the level of personalization.
Three databases are combined using specific algorithms to generate a text file containing the information to be uploaded to the SMS delivery platform, which sends personalized SMS messages to patients. Current features of the systems developed:
- Semi-automatic.
- With human intervention.
- With the programmes, structures and services of the Balearic Islands Health System.
Clinical trial Phase 3 completed (n=740) with positive results demonstrating improvements in quality of life, disease self-management and self-reported medication adherence (NCT05006872).
Benefits for the patient:
- Improved quality of life for the patient, in terms of physical activity and nutrition, thanks to self-management of the disease.
- The messages have been developed by a multidisciplinary clinical team (health professionals, nutritionists, etc.) and validated directly by the patients, who have been actively involved in the development of the tool.
- Personalized recommendations based on self-reported data and electronic health records.
- Improved medication adherence for people with diabetes.
- Ease of use and accessibility via smartphones.
Benefits for the healthcare institution:
- It is an efficient and cost-effective system that can be integrated into healthcare reporting systems.
- Potential economic savings to the healthcare system, as self-management of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus could prevent the development of other co-morbidities.
- The tool implements a system of pseudo-anonymization, requesting only the specific data required to generate messages, without accessing or storing complete patient information.
- Easily customizable message library for the healthcare system
The represented institution is looking for a collaboration that leads to a commercial exploitation of the presented invention.
