Radial and ulnar nerve disorders can cause a significant loss of hand function, affecting basic tasks and personal autonomy. Current solutions are often rigid, uncomfortable and not very customizable, which limits their effectiveness and widespread use.

In this context, researchers from UPV have developed a low-cost, fully customizable 3D-printed orthosis, together with proprietary software that automatically generates devices adapted to each user.

The technology consists of a lightweight hand orthosis with independent rods designed to follow the natural movement of each finger and assist extension without limiting flexion. The system incorporates specific joints for the fingers and thumb, as well as a flexible structure that improves adaptation to the hand.

Thanks to proprietary IA-based software and 3D printing, each orthosis is manufactured in a customized way using resistant materials and internal padding to ensure comfort and a precise fit.

The device has a fully operational functional prototype and is at TRL 4-5, with the mechanics, ergonomics and customization process already validated and ready for expanded testing with users.

Key advantages:

  • Ergonomic and lightweight design that improves comfort during prolonged use.
  • Full wrist and finger mobility to facilitate everyday activities.
  • Transmission system based on elastic rotation that follows extension naturally.
  • Customization through IA algorithms and 3D printing adapted to each patient.
  • Simple and scalable production that reduces costs and improves availability.
  • Modular components that allow quick adjustments and easy replacement of parts.

The institution is seeking feedback and the possibility of establishing a collaboration to advance the technological development of the orthosis and facilitate its future commercial exploitation.
