New VR simulator for orotracheal intubation training

Training in medical procedures such as orotracheal intubation remains challenging due to the need for specialized equipment, dedicated simulation facilities and continuous supervision by expert personnel. As a result, there is growing demand for solutions that maintain the pedagogical value of clinical simulation while reducing operational costs and increasing availability. In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising alternative, enabling immersive and repeatable training environments capable of realistically reproducing clinical scenarios.

In this context, a group of researchers from Universitat Jaume I (UJI) has developed a virtual reality environment for the realistic training of orotracheal intubation, integrated with a web platform that allows user management, data collection and monitoring of training activity.

The technology is a comprehensive training platform composed of three integrated components: an immersive virtual environment for practicing orotracheal intubation, a database that captures and analyzes key training metrics (such as step completion times, errors, and movement efficiency), and an associated web platform that functions as a control dashboard for instructors and training managers. This architecture enables autonomous practice, as well as objective evaluation of performance, monitoring of student progress and user management.

The project is currently at TRL 6, with the platform having been validated in a relevant environment through testing with 23 healthcare professionals from different fields, showing a significant acceptance among participants. Usability and satisfaction results obtained during testing (System Usability Scale score of 74% and an overall rating of 4 out of 5) support its effectiveness as a training resource.

The represented institution is seeking for a collaboration that would either enable the commercial exploitation of the presented invention or support its further development towards a more advanced stage of technological maturity. However, the form, terms, and conditions of the collaboration can be openly discussed if the presented technology is of interest.
